The photos are of a bullet round which Peter Mogielnicki found among the boulders in front the the Sisters of Notre Dame retreat next to Nun's Beach (AKA Dowd's Beach; AKA Little Beach) while fishing after Hurricane Sandy last fall. It seems to Peter that it must have come from one of the Grumman Hellcat's that practiced aircraft carrier landings at the Charlestown Auxiliary Naval Station which is now the Ninigret Wildlife Refuge. A bit of web research by Peter indicated that the usual plane which practiced there was a Grumman Hellcat F6F. They were armed with six M2/AN .50 caliber Browning air-cooled machine guns. To his eye, the bullet he discovered is fifty caliber. The end of the bullet appears to be stamped S 43.
